Swisscows was founded to create a zone free from surveillance, tracking, and data storage. This goal remains unchanged.
But the digital landscape has evolved – and with it, the conditions under which we can operate.

Due to new requirements from our partners, it is no longer possible for us to completely avoid surveillance in the free version of Swisscows Search.
Ads provided by external vendors inevitably create data flows that we are not permitted to block technically.

This means: The free Swisscows version remains family-friendly (free of violence and pornography), safe, and values-based – but no longer 100% anonymous in the free search. In the paid version, Swisscows PRO, anonymity is fully guaranteed.
We still do not store any of our own data, but due to technical requirements from advertising partners, user interactions can no longer remain entirely surveillance-free.

To ensure that users can continue searching in complete privacy, we created Swisscows Pro.

With Swisscows Pro:
• no data is stored
• no advertisements are displayed
• no search queries are shared
• your privacy remains fully protected on a technical level
• search remains just as anonymous as Swisscows was originally designed to be

Why Was This Step Necessary?

The truth is simple and uncomfortable:
Search engines without advertising are not financially viable.

And because Bing will no longer allow privacy-safe advertisements starting in 2026, we were faced with two options: shut down Swisscows entirely, or create a path that allows anonymous search to remain possible – but as a paid premium service, the Swisscows PRO Search.

We chose the second option because we believe there are people who truly need privacy – not as a luxury, but as a fundamental right.

What Does This Mean for the Free Version of Swisscows?

The open Swisscows Search remains:
• family-friendly
• free of violence and pornography
• free of manipulated search results
• free of tracking by Swisscows itself
• a safe place for children and families

But:
Due to external advertising technologies, it is no longer fully anonymous.
